Grass skiing at Solang Valley near Manali

To add more to adventure sports, Atal Bihari Vajpayee Institute of Mountaineering and Allied Sports (ABVIMAS) at Manali (Himachal Pradesh) is planning to introduce Grass skiing from September this year. The adventure activity will be offered as a new tourist attraction at Solang Valley. The Institute has commenced cultivation of summer slopes to provide more gradual slopes required for Grass skiing. Appropriate skiing and safety equipment has already been procured from Europe.

“Grass skiing, although not an Olympic event, is a recognised international sport. We have purchased high quality equipment from Europe and will begin training our staff in July just before the Monsoon season. We have made arrangements to ensure the safety of the tourists, which is of utmost importance, as grass slopes tend are more hard than snow slopes. We have not finalised the rates for the activity but will try and keep it inexpensive in order to suit the budgets of all tourists,” stated Mahavir Thakur, Deputy Director, Skiing, ABVIMAS.
